Six Dogs Blue, the most royal of gins is unusual in many ways. We have compiled this FAQ to help with the oft asked questions relating to Blue.
How does Six Dogs Blue get its colour? The beautiful blue – not a colour often found in nature – is derived from the flower of the Blue Pea plant. Don’t worry: it’s entirely natural and there are no artificial colouring agents or other additives in this Gin!
Is the botanical name for Blue Pea really ‘Clitoria Ternatea’? Yes the botanical name for Blue Pea is indeed Clitoria Ternatea! Take a look at the flower – there’s a picture of it on the label and on the box – and you’ll see why!
Is it true that Six Dogs Blue is an aphrodisiac? While we’d love to describe Six Dogs Blue as a ‘gin with benefits’, all that we can honestly say is that the Blue Pea used in our Gin is renowned in Ayurvedic medicine as an aphrodisiac.
Why is the colour of Six Dogs Blue sometimes indigo or purple? The colour of the gin comes from the Blue Pea flower. The colour is ‘morphogenic’, meaning that it will change depending on the refraction of light through the liquid or the actual light source. In natural light the colour is mostly blue and under fluorescent light it is mostly indigo. As our smallest dog is called Blue, we chose to name the gin Blue, not Indigo!
Why does the colour change to pink when a good tonic is added? This is the magic of Six Dogs Blue Gin! Because the blue pea flower reflects the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of the mix, and because tonic is more acidic, the colour will change to a light pink when tonic is added. The same if a lemon is added to the gin.
What are the distinguishing botanicals in Six Dogs Blue? The mystical Blue Pea flower and Rose Pelargonium are the standout botanicals in Six Dogs Blue Gin, which also boasts Juniper, Naartjie, Angelica, and Coriander.
Where do you get your Blue Pea plant? The Blue Pea grows naturally in Indonesia and we source it from a supplier who treats the plant especially for us. We are currently growing the Blue Pea on our farm to see how it adapts to the South African climate.
Where do you get your Rose Pelargonium? This beautiful botanical comes mainly from the mother plant that grows on our farm. It is freshly cut every morning for infusion into the Blue Gin.
As we use a great deal of Rose Pelargonium (Pelargonium Graveolens) in our gin , we are currently supplementing our supply from a neighbouring farmer until our new Pelargonium plants start growing in Spring.
Does the colour fade over time? As the colour is entirely natural, it will fade over time. Store it in the fridge once opened or keep it in its box, out of the way of prolonged direct sunlight.
What is the overall taste sensation of Six Dogs Blue? Blue is the most royal of Gins. It embodies the freshness of a classic dry but offers two infusions previously unknown in the world of Gin: the Blue Pea which provides an earthy ‘cut-grass’ layer; and Rose Pelargonium, which gives the Gin its refreshing lightness.
What else is unique to Six Dogs Blue? Six Dogs Blue Gin represents the epitome of small batch craft Gin production. The infusion process keeps our batch size at around 66 bottles per batch. Oh, and within the realm of Ayurvedic and natural medicine, the Blue Pea flower (apart from being an aphrodisiac) is claimed to:
- Detoxify the body (contains the antioxidant anthocyanin also found in blueberries and purple grapes)
- Be a natural antidepressant
- Improve cognitive function, memory, and motivation

- To JHB, PTA and Durban: 4 – 6 business days
- To regional areas*: 6 – 8 business days
- To remote areas**: 8 – 10 business days
We deliver between 09h00 and 17h00 on business days (i.e. Monday to Friday, excluding South African public holidays).
*Regional areas: 50-100km outside of CPT, JHB, PTA and DBN.
**Remote areas: Areas in South Africa other than the main centres and regional areas. 100km+ outside of CPT, JHB, PTA and DBN
For specially sourced products that are unavailable for prompt delivery, delivery may take an additional 10-21 days. Should this apply to a product you have ordered, we will notify you via email .

We will liaise directly with you to confirm the delivery date and costs of international shipment.
Tracking your order
We offer over 7000 products and, as is the nature with an online business, orders occur throughout the day and night. As a result, occasionally there will be instances where we cannot deliver the product you ordered.
If this happens, our customer service team will be in touch and recommend a comparable item or offer you a full refund.
If there will be a significant delay in the delivery of on one or more of the products in your order, we will ship the in-stock products to you separately, in a split delivery. You will receive an email notifying you of the partial delivery.

We understand the importance of on-time deliveries, and we will try our utmost to manage any special delivery requests.
Orders which you cancel will be refunded less a deduction of 10% of the order value for administration costs.
Bottleshop reserves the right to cancel an order for which payment has been received. This may occur if stock is insufficient or the quality of the products ordered does not meet our standards. Should we exercise this right, you will receive a full refund with no deductions.
Returns and refund policy
Bottleshop accepts returns on an expired or damaged product only where such expiration or damage occurred before you accepted the product from the courier. Please therefore check your product carefully before signing for it.
Where you do not sign for a product because it is damaged or, where relevant, past its expiration date, you must notify us within 24 hours of delivery. We will then arrange to have the product collected. Please ensure that you receive confirmation that your communication to Bottleshop was received within 1 day, to ensure the 24-hour return period is not exceeded .
If you notify us of damage or expiration after the 24-hour period, the product must be sent to us at your cost.
Where the return is accepted by Bottleshop, the refund will be processed via the initial payment method (i.e. return EFT to the same bank account or return payment to the same credit card used for your purchase).
Please note that all returned products must be returned in their original packaging and in the same condition as you received them.

Please note that we do not sell any of our wines by vintage unless stated clearly in the product description and product title. Images of wines are for illustration purposes only. We will not accept any returns or refunds should you have bought wine by picture vintage description.
