South Africa’s very own grape variety is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, formed in a lab in the 1920s when a professor of viticulture wanted to take the very best elements of both varieties to create a more robust, but still flavourful wine. Pinotage often divides wine drinkers, but when it’s made well, it’s a true national treasure. With flavours of plums, black cherries, spice and hints of smoke, Pinotage is a great match around the braaivleis or with tomato-based meals like pizza and pasta.
