#Daily Drams - Dram 14 - Caol Ila 12 Year Old - BUY HERE

Caol Ila means the "Sound of Islay" describing the stretch of water between Islay and the Island of Jura. It was across this stretch of water that little steamship the Pibroch brought the coal, barley and oak barrels for the distillery. Caol Ila is one of the lead whiskies for Johnnie Walker Black Label.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Blazing saddles. Characteristic prickly fresh sea air aromas only run to smokiness after a while, though adding water brings out a smouldering beach bonfire. Behind these lurk acid drops, lemon, pomegranate, citrus zest and kumquats.
Palate: Big flavours, but the smokiness is restrained. Peaty and dry.
Finish: Liquorice and light smoke with a long, smooth finish.

#Daily Drams - Dram 9  - Ardbeg 10 Year Old - BUY HERE

Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt to produce a whisky of perfect balance.

Typically most whiskies are chill-filtered and reduced to a strength of 40% ABV. Ardbeg Ten Years Old, however, is non chill-filtered and has a strength of 46% ABV, thus retaining maximum flavour, at the same time giving more body and added depth. It’s whisky with none of the goodness taken out!

A burst of intense smoky fruit escapes into the atmosphere – peat infused with zesty lemon and lime, wrapped in waxy dark chocolate.

Bold menthol and black pepper slice through the sweet smoke followed by tarry ropes and graphite. As you dip your nose in further, savour the aroma of smoked fish and crispy bacon alongside green bell peppers, baked pineapple and pear juice.

Add water and breathe in the vortex of aromas rising from the glass. An oceanic minerality brings a breath of cool, briny seaspray on chalky cliffs. Waxed lemon and lime follows with coal tar soap, beeswax and herby pine woodlands. Toasted vanilla and sizzling cinnamon simmer in the background with warm hazelnut and almond toffee.

An explosion of crackling peat sets off millions of flavour explosions on the tongue: peat effervesces with tangy lemon and lime juice, black pepper pops with sizzling cinnamon-spiced toffee. This is followed by a wave of brine infused with smooth buttermilk, ripe bananas and currants. Smoke gradually wells up on the palate bringing a mouthful of warm creamy cappuccino and toasted marshmallows. As the taste lengthens and deepens, dry espresso, liquorice root and tarry smoke develop coating the palate with chewy peat oils

#Daily Drams - Dram 7 - Glenfarclas 12 Year Old - BUY HERE

Colour: Vibrant amber-gold.

Nose: Fresh and beautifully light, sherried fruit combined with a tempting spicy sweetness and a hint of sappy oak.

Flavour: Full bodied, delightful sherried fruit, with oak, a hint of peat and delicious sweet sensations.

Finish: Long and flavoursome, with a lingering spiceness.

Comment: An excellent introduction to the distillery style. Glenfarclas means Glen of the Green Grassland, and the freshness on the nose reminds me of grassland in spring. So, for me, this is the ‘farclas’ aroma. In 2006 this was named the ‘Best Sherried Whisky’ in the Single Malt World Cup. More recently Glenfarclas 12 Years Old won Gold at the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival in 2007 and again in 2008.

The darkest and most intense whisky in the extra-matured range, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban has spent 10 years maturing in American white oak casks, before being transferred into specially selected ruby port pipes from the Quintas or wine estates of Portugal.

Dark mint chocolate, tangerines and Seville oranges mingle with sandalwood and walnut before giving way to a spicy finish of pepper and nutmeg.

Mint chocolate and walnuts envelop the palate like velvet, laying the foundations for rose, Turkish delight and sweet Seville oranges.

Sunlit rose gold

#Daily Drams - Dram 4 - AncNoc 16 Year Old - BUY HERE

Wholly maturing anCnoc in American bourbon barrels allows the characteristic intense citrus notes to shine through. anCnoc 16 Years Old has been bottled in its most natural form, as it’s neither chill-filtered nor coloured. As a result, it may develop a light haze with the addition of water or if kept at a cold temperature. This haze is a natural characteristic of whisky that is unchill-filtered.

Sparkling gold with a slight yellow hue.

An intense aroma that awakens your senses with bursts of citrus fruit, before slowly melting into a soft and sweet, fragrant vanilla.

Light and zesty with a hint of spice, warming up to what can only be described as ‘stick to your teeth’ toffee. A long and lingering finish leaving you ready for the next sip.

Alc vol 46%

#Daily Drams - Dram 3 - Laphroaig 10 Year Old - BUY HERE

Laphroaig 10 Year Old is an all-malt Scotch Whisky from the remote island of Islay in the Western Isles of Scotland. Laphroaig, pronounced "La-froyg", is a Gaelic word meaning "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay".

In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour.

Laphroaig is best savoured neat, or with a little cool water. Roll it around on your tongue. Release the pungent, earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley, the delicate heathery perfume of Islay's streams. It is as unique as the island itself.

COLOUR : Full sparkling gold

NOSE: Huge smoke, seaweedy, "medicinal", with a hint of sweetness

BODY: Full bodied

PALATE: Suprising sweetness with hints of salt and layers of peatiness

FINISH: Lingering

#Daily Drams - Dram 1 - Bowmore 12 Year Old - BUY HERE

Complex yet perfectly balanced, our 12 Years Old reflects the raw essence of Bowmore - thrashing waves, windswept landscapes and generations of tradition. Bowmore 12 Years Old has received much critical acclaim; the late, great whisky writer Michael Jackson proclaimed it "remarkably long and complex". We like to think of it as vanilla ice cream at a beach bonfire.
