Italy’s third most-planted grape variety is slowly on the rise in South Africa, and has found favourable soils and climate in the Swartland, Wellington and Paarl (thanks in no small part to the grape’s ability to hold on to acidity and fruit in warmer climates). Traditionally it has low tannins, with fresh red fruit flavours (cherries, blackberries) and even some dried fruit notes
