This week we are featuring our Top 12 Year Old Whiskies. The below selection are some of the best Whiskies available in the market ranging from R450 - R700 per bottle. We have had the opportunity to try all of them and have given our views and notes which may assist you in deciding which bottle to try out.
The Aberlour 12 Year Old is probably one of our most favourite 12 year old
whiskies available on the market. The bottle itself is elegant and short, showing
off the beautiful dark sherry coloured liquid that awaits you. This is a beautiful
double cask matured whisky which creates a softened texture on your palate.
As the whisky is matured in traditional oak barrels with sherry butts, you get a
wonderfully light sweetness coming through sip after sip.
Glenfarclas 12 Year Old is another 12 year old whisky which is one of our favourites.
You could clearly classify this closely to the Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry oak.
Glenfarclas 12 year brings out sweet citrus aromas with a delicious caramel taste on
the palate. One could easily drink this whisky on a daily basis.
The Balvenie 12 Year Old is a phenomenal 12 year old Whisky which we highly recommend.
Not a lot of new whisky drinkers are familiar with the brand and quality and neither were we until
we tried it. The Balvenie 12 Year Old takes about 2 drams to get used to the taste and flavour, however once your palate has become used to the slight sherry flavour mixed with an oak taste,
you will absolutely love this whisky.
Caol Ila 12 Year Old is one of my favourite peaty whiskies. The bottling is an old classic style
bottling which reminds us a lot of the Port Ellen Bottlings. This is a magnificent whisky for all
occasions, but we recommend it is enjoyed better during the colder months of the year with
a nice stew or roast. The strength of the peat in the whisky definitely helps break down a heavy, rich meal.
Bowmore 12 Year Old was a very interesting whisky for us. We tried it for the first time in 2014
as it was once again available in South Africa. It is soft and mellow and almost a perfect mix between a sherry cask taste ending with very light smokiness. One of the classic reminders
that it is a Islay whisky.
Glenmorangie Lasanta is one of our favourite sherry cask whiskies. Dark Ruby in colour and
very sweet on the palate. We enjoy this whisky as an everyday drinking whisky. We
recommend this whisky to anyone wanting to buy a good value for money 12 year old whisky.
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is matured in Port Casks. This can be seen immediately in
the colour of the liquid inside the bottle. A lovely light ruby colour and very easy drinking
whisky with subtle flavours of orange, oak and caramel. For a medium priced whisky,
this is definitely great value for money and one to savour on the weekends.
Redbreast 12 Year Old produced in Ireland. What an incredible 12 year old Irish Whiskey.
You have to sip this two or three times for your palate to get used to it, but the flavours are
absolutely incredible. We believe the flavour enhancement comes from the pot distillation
process which makes it taste completely different to any other whisky you will have tried,
but it thoroughly enjoyable.
